Industry: ABB
ABB Transportation Tramont works, Zürich Switzerland. 26.07.1994. BR (Railfreight Distribution) class 92, number 92002 H.G. Wells a long way from home.
The explanation? Some of these locomotives visited an endurance testing facility in the Czeck Republic and 92002 had to be returned to ABB following a failure.
The locomotive's inverters had been supplied by the Tramont works, and so the locomotive came there for attention, becoming the first and the only member of it's class ever to have come there, or indeed to Switzerland.
An SBB RE460 is visible in the background. The inverters used on the class 92 are based on those of this type.
The class 92 is a Co-Co dual voltage electric locomotive equipped to work off 50Hz 25kV in the Channel Tunnel and ac lines in Britain, and (at reduced power) 750V DC of the former Southern Region. The class is used predominantly on freight work. They were originally also intended to work night sleeper trains through the Channel Tunnel, but plans for such services were later dropped altogether.
