ABB Transportation Tramont works, Zürich Switzerland. 26.07.1994. SBB Re460 locomotive, 460042-5 (left) returned to works for guarantee modifications alongside the new BLS Re465, 465003-2 which has arrived from SLM in Winterthur and is still supported on accomodation bogies, waiting for it's electrical equipment to be fitted.
Class Re460 is a high performance mixed traffic Bo-Bo. It's top speed in 235km/h, although this capablility is not to be used for some time. It's exterior was designed by Pininfarina. The locomotive has water cooled GTO inverters supplying the asynchronous traction motors which are computer controlled to optimise adhesion. Axles are radially adjusted to reduce track wear, which makes the locomotive at home on the Gotthard where up to 4 can be used in multiple for heavy freight trains..
Class Re465 is a development of this class. Besides being slightly more powerful, each axle can be controlled individually whereas on the Re460 this is done by bogies. In contrast to the Re460, the Re465 is also able to work in multiple with older locomotives.
The Re460/465 design was highly succesful, and similar locomotives were supplied to Norway, Finnland and Hong Kong!
