Basel – Weil approved

Combino tram BaselWeil's council approved the cross-border tram extension from Basel on Friday with a surprising majority of 22 votes to 10. Construction should begin later this year. Weil's contribution to the project is 5 million Franks. Baden Württemberg is paying 15 million and the Lörrach region (Landkreis) 1.6 million. On the Swiss side, Basel is paying 42 million, BVB 1.6 million and the Swiss federal government is contributing 43.6 million. BVB's Combino trams must undergo certain minor modifications to make them conform to German regulations. Freiburg will be supporting BVB in implementing these. The most visible difference will be the fitting of rear brake lights, which trams are not required to carry in Switzerland.
