Bern and Biel order Hess trolleybuses

Following a joint tendering process, Bern and Biel are awarding the supply of 33 new trolleybuses to Hess. Bern is acquiring 16 single-articulated and 7 double-articulated units replacing their entire current fleet (20 Swisstrolley 2, delivered between 1997 and 2000) for 28 million CHF. Deliveries will commence in 2018. Biel is acquiring 10 single-articulated units to partially replace the present fleet.

The new trolleybuses will be of type Swisstrolley 5 and use powerful battery packs rather than auxiliary diesels to facilitate off-wire operation.
