Electric bus future

According to a VBZ press release, commencing in October, a battery bus will be tested on VBZ's midibus routes / ligher local bus routes (these are the 35, 38, 39, 40, 64, 73, 79 and 307). The demonstrator is being supplied by the Czech company SOR. The bus will be operated with 100% renewable electricity. New buses will be required for these routes from 2019.

The release also mentions the new "battery trolleybus" being jointly developed by Hess, VBZ, ETH and Berner Fachhochschule. The new trolleybus will have a larger range of off-wire operation than the presently available battery trolleybuses.

The proposed electrification of routes 69 and 80 is also mentioned. This is envisaged for the period 2019 to 2022.

Hybrid buses are also being considered as an option for further increasing the share of electric traction.
