Zürich leads in public transport usage
A recently published study reveals that 62 percent of commuters into the city of Zürich use public transport. This figure is higher than in any other Swiss city (Bern: 56%, Basel: 54%). In the broader Zürich area, the figure is considerably lower (at 37%) but still well above the national average (27%). The study shows that relative journey times affect the choice of mode. On connections where public transport requires 1.5 times as long as driving, 50% use public transport. For public transport journeys that requires twice as long as the car, this share drops to 20%. It is thus no surprise that public transport is used more intensively on radial connections than on tangential ones (in one example of the latter — Oberland to Pfannenstiel — the share was at 17%). The share of public transport also rises over longer distances (88% for commuters from Bern, 85% from Basel and 73% from Luzern and St. Gallen). These results were published by the Canton of Zürich in a study entitled "Verkehrsmittel der Pendler im Zürcher Wirtschaftsraum" and are based on data of the 2000 census.
