Lausanne's metro opens

Lausanne's rubber-tyred metro (M2) commenced regular operation this morning. The line from Ouchy to Epalinges is said to be Switzerland's first "proper" metro. Between Ouchy and Flon it re-uses the alignment of the Ficelle cog railway, which was closed in January 2006.

Plans to re-deploy the old Ficelle stock in the French mountain resort of Villard de Lans have meanwhile been dropped.
